Poster Series
Invitational Typography
Create a series of three posters using typography and imagery to promote a series of events. Each poster should highlight and communicate the impact of a specific person's work, using strong visual composition to engage and persuade viewers.
OBJECTIVE
Design a cohesive series of three typographic posters for Altered Earth, a poetry performance. Each poster highlights the unique voice of a featured poet while maintaining a connected visual system. The goal is to engage and attract an art-minded audience interested in contemporary poetry and design.
WHO?
Heid E. Erdrich
Orchid Tierney
Hussain Ahmed
Heid E. Erdrich is an Ojibwe poet, writer, and curator whose work explores Indigenous identity, storytelling, and the natural world. A member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, she blends personal narrative, cultural history, and experimental form in collections like Curator of Ephemera at the New Museum for Archaic Media and Little Big Bully, using humor, lyricism, and layered meaning to reflect on contemporary Indigenous experiences. Beyond writing, Erdrich advocates for Native voices through editing, teaching, and curating, often creating projects that bridge poetry and visual art to expand the ways audiences engage with Indigenous creativity.Orchid Tierney is a poet, scholar, and editor whose experimental work engages deeply with ecological and environmental themes. Born in New Zealand and now based in the United States, her poetry blends conceptual writing, visual poetics, and found text to explore human impact on landscapes, waste, and environmental change. Her collection a year of misreading the Wildcats (2019) uses fragmented language to reflect on disaster, loss, and resilience. In addition to her poetry, Tierney contributes to literary criticism and editing, connecting her academic insights with her creative practice and establishing herself as a prominent voice in experimental and ecologically focused literature.
Hussain Ahmed is a Nigerian poet and writer whose work explores identity, migration, memory, and the intersections of personal and political histories. His lyrical poetry weaves vivid imagery with elements of Nigerian culture, history, and folklore, reflecting on belonging, familial relationships, and the impacts of colonialism and conflict. Beyond writing, Ahmed contributes as an editor and curator, fostering contemporary literary discourse, and his work has earned recognition through fellowships and awards, establishing him as a significant voice in poetry that examines displacement, heritage, and the complexities of identity.TEXTURE EXPLORATIONDIGITAL EXPLORATION
Digital ideations allow me to explore and experiment with layout, typography, color, and composition in a flexible, iterative way. By sketching and refining concepts digitally, I can quickly test different approaches, visualize hierarchy, and ensure each design aligns with the project’s goals before moving into final production. This process helps save time, maintain consistency across a series, and push creative boundaries while keeping the user or audience experience in mind.
DESIGN SYSTEM
I developed a cohesive design system that allows the remaining posters to be created efficiently, using shared visual elements and hierarchy to maintain a unified series while still showcasing the distinct voice of each poet.
